I’ve now forgotten which year I acquired a cow’s horn and decided I needed to turn it into a unicorn horn for Halloween. Obviously, it was a year in which my glasses frames were especially grim. I spent a futile weekend trying to figure out a way of affixing the horn to my head, and then my mother Grayson had the bright idea of taking it to the Dark Shadows prop department and having them solve the dilemma. They put on padding, drilled holes into the sides of the horn, and bolted on a velcro strap. Though I absolutely adored the final result, and wanted to wear it everywhere, as the photo plainly illustrates I did not look like a unicorn. I looked like a grade school kid with glasses and a horn bolted onto his head. But in my mind….

This picture came from a friend of a friend off an internet site. I don’t have it (well, now I do) and I’m not sure where it came from.To whomever originally posted: I’d love to find out more, and thank you publicly.

That’s kind of you! I wish I still had the horn, but I distinctly remember throwing it out after college. The padding was crumbling and torn, and one doesn’t have much call for one of those as an adult, unfortunately.

Your mother loved you very much! I can tell. How blessed you were! Did you save any other special momentos of those days?

A fellow named Alan on the Jonathan Frid Facebook group posted it to me, wanting to know if it was you. I was fairly certain it was, but wanted to make sure. Anyway, it’s very evident how much your mom loved you even in the small things she did. She left quite a legacy.

Mystery solved! I would like to thank Alan James Gallant for finding this photo deep in the internet and instigating a conversation that the dude with the horn might be me. Thanks, Alan!

OMG grim eyeglasses! That one particular comment took me on a trip down my own memory lane. Being the same age as you I’m quite sure that the selection of eyeglasses for kiddos was not so very different in NYC from my hometown in New England, I remember going with my Dad to select blue “cat’s eye” frames, which were all the rage for girls at the time. Daddy told me I looked beautiful; photos taken at the time reveal a somewhat different truth. Anyway, your posts always make me smile!

Yeah, it was a stylistic desert. But I’ll never forget the revelation of putting on prescription glasses for the first time and walking down a street I’d walked a thousand times before and seeing signs three stories up that I’d never known were there.

My husband and I are just a little older than you and during that time he had exactly the same glasses frames. Actually he had the same style into high school, since his mother thought that they were “sturdy” and would last. They did!
I think that this is the only picture I have ever seen with you and your mom where you were not a baby or toddler. Great picture and great story.

There ARE other pictures. I haven’t thought that much about posting pix, mostly because I’m all about the writing. But I’ll keep on the lookout for something cool. Thanks for reading, thanks for posting!
